Figures Created using BioRender

BioRender is a company based in Toronto, Canada whose goal is to empower the world to learn and communicate science faster through visuals. They have a HUGE icon library specialized in graphics and icons that help researchers, teachers, students, industry professionals, and clinicians communicate their work to their desired audience. The program is simple to use, with drag and drop icons, and a collection of pre-made templates created by specialists in their respective fields. This is a collection of figures that I have created using the free version of BioRender to communicate various topics.

Image depicting a regular ovulatory menstrual cycle and an anovulatory menstrual cycle (common in polycystic ovarian syndrome)

Menstrual Cycle Comparison

This illustration depicts a typical menstrual cycle with ovulation and the related hormone fluctuations. Below, we have an atypical menstrual cycle without ovulation (anovulatory) which is common in individuals with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Protocol

This is a series of instructions with illustrations to guide an individual in stimulating the motor cortex using double cone transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). The lab I am completing my Ph.D. in uses this technique to stimulate the pelvic floor muscles with TMS.

This figure was created in BioRender with an additional icon I created of the double cone TMS in Adobe Illustrator.

Depolarization of a Neuron

This illustration depicts the depolarization of a neuron in a very simple diagram. The goal was to show the main mechanism that swaps the charges across the membrane of one section of the action potential.

This figure was created completely in BioRender for educational purposes.

Image depicting a transvaginal ultrasound with the ultrasound image and an anatomy image side-by-side.

Transvaginal Ultrasound Imaging Template

This template was made in BioRender for displaying transvaginal ultrasound images. Ultrasound images can be quite tricky to present as it is difficult to orient your audience to the image. BioRender does not currently have a template or series of icons depicting this process and as such, I created an icon of a healthcare provider imaging an individual’s pelvic organs. The figures were created in Adobe Illustrator to match BioRender’s style. I have also used Adobe Illustrator to depict the pelvic organs in a side view to help viewers compare the ultrasound image to the anatomy.

Transperineal Ultrasound Imaging Template

This template was made in BioRender for displaying transperineal ultrasound images.

Transperineal Ultrasound Imaging Example

This figure shows how one would use the ultrasound imaging template shown above. This is a transperineal ultrasound image that I have rotated and cropped to match the anatomy figure. I have included outlines of the landmarks as well.

Participant Recruitment Template

This template was created in BioRender to help create participant recruitment posters for research involving human participants.
